UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School seeks a visionary, strategic leader to join the MBA leadership team as Executive Director of Admissions and Student Recruitment (ED). Reporting to the Managing Director of MBA Programs, the ED is responsible for the overall recruitment, selection and enrollment of MBA students across all UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School MBA programs: Full-Time MBA, MBA@UNC, Weekend MBA, Evening MBA, and Global OneMBA. The new ED will be an innovative and thoughtful leader who will bring a creative and data-informed perspective to form a cohesive, integrated and collaborative admissions and recruitment function. Responsible for the full portfolio of UNC Kenan-Flagler’s MBA programs, the ED will play a critical role in the school’s future by partnering with staff and faculty to attract a diverse, talented and engaged student population locally, nationally, virtually, and internationally.

The ED is a new position responsible for admissions and recruitment for the full suite of MBA programs, and joins a newly-redesigned leadership team which includes the Executive Director of Student Engagement, the Executive Director of Academics and Operations, the Executive Director of Career and Leadership, and the Director of Business Planning. The ED for Admissions and Recruitment will provide leadership and supervision to a team of 12. Kenan-Flagler Business School Leadership

Douglas A. Shackelford, Dean

Dr. Shackelford served as the first associate dean of MBA@UNC, the innovative online MBA program, from 2010 until he became dean on February 1, 2014. He served as senior associate dean for academic affairs from 2003-2007, and as associate dean of the Master of Accounting Program from 1998-2002.
 He is the former director of the UNC Tax Center, which he founded in 2001. An award-winning researcher and teacher, Dr. Shackelford’s work focuses on tax and business strategy. His current areas of interest include the effects of shareholder taxes on equity prices, taxation of multinationals, and disclosure of corporate tax information.

Dr. Shackelford is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Cambridge, Mass. He has published widely in accounting, economics, finance, and law journals. He has held visiting faculty positions at Stanford University, Universiteit Maastricht in the Netherlands, and Oxford University. A CPA, he was a senior tax consultant with Arthur Andersen in Boston and Greensboro from 1981-85.

He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Sridhar Balasubramanian, Senior Associate Dean of MBA Programs

Dr. Balasubramanian is the Senior Associate Dean for MBA Programs, Roy & Alice H. Richards Bicentennial Distinguished Scholar, and Professor of Marketing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of market strategy and technology strategy, innovation and growth strategy, customer-focus, service design and marketing, e- business, customer relationship management, game theory, and the management of competition. He has been recognized for his pioneering research on how the Internet and mobile channels are reshaping the worlds of business and marketing. Poets & Quants has recognized him as one of the Top 50 Business Professors in the World.

Dr. Balasubramanian has also been frequently recognized for outstanding teaching. He was designated a MBA Master Teacher at UNC. He is a six-time winner of the Best Teacher award in UNC Kenan-Flagler Executive MBA programs. He has received the Roy W. Holsten Award for Outstanding Service and Dedication to the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School – the school’s highest such recognition. Before beginning his academic career, Sridhar was Area Sales Manager for India’s leading food manufacturing and marketing company. Sridhar received MA and PhD degrees from Yale University, an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM Bangalore-India) and a B. Tech degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Kharagpur-India).

Melissa Hlavac, Managing Director of MBA Programs

Ms. Hlavac joined UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School as Director of Business Development in Executive Development. Subsequently, she went on to lead various initiatives within UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and the MBA@UNC program. Prior to joining UNC-Chapel Hill, she resided in New York City and served as Managing Director of Advertising at The New York Times, where she led business development teams and spearheaded data analytics to generate incremental revenues. She was also a member of The New York Times Strategic Planning team that shaped significant business strategies including the expansion from print to digital. In addition, Ms. Hlavac served as Advertising Director at Reader’s Digest for Selecciones, the largest globally circulated Spanish language publication, and she was a journalist at media companies including Gannett, which publishes USA Today, and The New York Times Company.

Ms. Hlavac earned her MBA from the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, where she was a Provost Fellow, and she received her bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Florida. She currently serves on the Chatham County Schools Board of Education in Pittsboro, North Carolina.

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

The Role

The Executive Director provides leadership and manages a team that delivers the recruiting and admissions processes for a portfolio of five highly-selective MBA programs. The successful candidate will bring an entrepreneurial spirit to the design, creation, and success of an integrated, innovative, student focused, and strategic enrollment management process. Under supervision of the Managing Director of MBA Programs, and in partnership with the cross-functional areas of Student Engagement, Academics & Operations, Career & Leadership, and Financial Planning & Analysis, as well as with Kenan-Flagler leadership, the ED will work to ensure the achievement of admissions strategies and policies that advance overall MBA program objectives and advance UNC Kenan-Flagler’s reputation and objectives overall.

The Executive Director leads a team that develops and executes recruiting events and information sessions, advises prospective applicants, interviews and evaluates applicants and engages students/alumni/faculty in the student recruitment process, and is the final decision maker on admission decisions. The position is responsible for data management and accurate reporting to the various constituents within and outside the University. The Executive Director is responsible for planning and managing the admissions budget as well as strategically managing the School’s fellowship budget and awards and for coordination with the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid. The position is the School’s primary representative to the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) and is responsible for researching current MBA trends and benchmarking Kenan-Flagler’s programs against other top MBA programs. Domestic and international travel is required, as is evening and weekend work.

Specifically, the new Executive Director will proactively provide leadership in the following areas:

Design and deliver an integrated strategy for admission and recruitment across programs

The Executive Director will formulate admissions strategies and enrollment objectives in coordination with the MBA leadership team across all UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School MBA programs and will develop a comprehensive and robust strategic plan to execute them. The ED will provide strategic direction and oversight to processes, procedures and practices that attract, enroll, and support a talented and diverse MBA student population using analytics and evidence-based methodologies with a focus on continual improvement.

Achieve net tuition revenue targets

The Executive Director manages the admissions and fellowship budgets and should understand the ways in which these can be used as a lever to help achieve incoming class credentials, and geographic, socioeconomic, and diversity goals to achieve net revenue targets. The ED will be a careful steward of department resources, with careful monitoring of expenditures and optimization of resources.

Develop and mentor a high-performing and dedicated staff

The ED will be a compelling and committed leader able to nurture a knowledgeable and versatile team characterized by a deep customer-service orientation, strong morale and the highest standards of ethics and integrity.

Build and maintain a network of internal and external relationships and partnerships that advance enrollment objectives

Critically important to the team-based nature of the MBA organization, the Director is responsible maintaining excellent relations and partnering with the Admissions & Student Recruitment, Academics & Operations, Career & Leadership and Financial Planning & Analysis teams. This includes a sharing information on current work-in-progress, supporting the teams both internally and externally, and maintaining open and honest communication. In addition, the Executive Director will work to maintain and build positive and productive relationships with UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School faculty and staff, MBA Alumni, and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School corporate partners, leveraging those relationships to attract, recruit and matriculate top quality MBA candidates.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will be an individual who has an understanding, personal alignment, and respect for the mission of UNC Kenan-Flagler and its vision for MBA enrollment. Breadth and depth of experience in enrollment management, strong business judgment and decision-making skills, a strong capability of working with data and analytics to guide and validate decision-making, the ability to work and interact in a transparent manner, and the ability to lead and manage are essential to success in this position.

Specific experiences and qualifications the ED should possess include:

  • Previous senior-level admissions experience in a top-ranked MBA or related program or relevant corporate experience in marketing, operations, or a related field;
  • Experience integrating across programs and building organizational structure to deliver an outstanding, student-centric experience;
  • An appreciation for various program delivery formats, including high-quality online offerings;
  • Experience managing the relationship with external technology partners;
  • Proficiency with admissions technology platforms, with a preference for experience with Slate and/or Salesforce;
  • The ability to build rapport and motivate staff and student and alumni volunteers, with attention to both developing strategy and building culture;
  • Excellent writing skills and superior presentation skills to both large groups and in one-on-one settings; and
  • MBA or other Master’s degree from an accredited college or university (required)

The ED should also demonstrate the following attributes:

  • An innovative, creative approach with an openness to new initiatives while honoring the traditions of Kenan-Flagler
  • A collaborative manager and leader who can balance internal oversight and engagement with the MBA Admissions team and other Kenan-Flagler departments with the external role representing the school to a variety of outside constituents, including prospective students and professional organizations;
  • Comfort with empowering high-performing staff to reach their potential;
  • Flexibility and adaptability as integration across programs continues;
  • An analytic mindset that utilizes data to inform decision-making;
  • Diplomatic skills, professionalism, and the highest integrity; and
  • High energy and enthusiasm
